Gem County Road Worker Wins $100,000 on Lottery Ticket

Boise – There’s an old saying that goes, “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.” This may never have been more true than for Ron and Alice Howard of Emmett who won $100,000 from the Idaho Lottery last Friday.

Late on Thursday night, Ron headed off to sleep while his wife of 44 years stayed up and scratched off a $10 Super Lucky Lines ScratchTM ticket from the Idaho Lottery. As he usually says before turning in for the night, Ron jokingly told his wife, “Wake me up if you have a big winner.”

Alice, a self-proclaimed night owl, scratched the winning ticket close to midnight.  “I got to the end of the line and then I scratched the prize. I couldn’t believe it,” exclaimed an excited Alice who was convinced she’d not played the game correctly. “Ain’t no way I’d won $100,000, I must have missed a number.”

Dutifully, she woke her husband who also was unconvinced it was a winner. But after both of them checked it several times, he became a believer.

“I always play, but you never expect winning like this is going to happen to you,” said Ron, who was born and raised in Emmett. “We took it back to the store to check it on Friday and the clerk told us we needed to head to Boise.  We couldn’t get in the pick-up truck fast enough.”

The Howards purchased their winning ticket from Scogans Food Mart #2 on Washington in Emmett. For their part in selling the winning ticket, Scogans will receive a bonus of $12,000 from the Idaho Lottery.

Ron, who works for the Gem County Road Department, said he and his wife may take their winnings and start looking at some retirement options.

And that’s a wish the Howards would be happy to have.
